Bhangra
got its start in a region called Punjab. This region is currently
divided among India and Pakistan. It is called Punjab because of the five rivers that flow
through the region: Jeelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. The region is ideal for
farming and is the breadbasket of India.
Bhangra appeared in Punjab hundreds of years ago. In the beginning it was sung during
times of harvest to make the day go by quicker. However, presently it is played at joyous
occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and other get togethers. There are numerous
instruments that are used in Bhangra music including the bhangra dhol, tumbi, chemta,
tabla and harmonium. In the past couple of decades the music has been mixed with techno,
disco, hip hop, drum and bass, reggae and rap. |
