Alders grow rapidly in a cool, wet climate to a height of more than 20 m (66 ft). Male and female alder flowers are called catkins. The tassellike male catkin is 5-15 cm (2-6 in) long. In summer, the 2.5-cm (1-in) female catkin becomes a conelike fruit. Shown is the European, or black, alder, A. glutinosa. |
