Global Wind Day (GWD) is a worldwide event that occurs annually on 15 June. It is a day for discovering wind energy, its power and the possibilities it holds to reshape our energy systems, decarbonise our economies and boost jobs and growth.
Global Wind Day: Overview
Global Wind Day: The day is organised by European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). People used to visit wind farms, meet experts, attend events and take action to support wind energy on this day.
GWD spread awareness about wind, its power and the possibilities it holds to reshape our energy systems and boost employment and growth.
Global Wind Day: History
In 2007, the day was first observed as ‘Wind Day‘. Later in 2009, EWEA and GWEC partnered up and named it World Wind Day or GWD. The European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) coordinate with various networks of partners to celebrate this day.
Significance:
With the threat of global warming approaching, it’s more important than ever to make optimal use of energy sources like wind. According to globalwindday.org, wind energy is now a mature and widely used technology. It is also one of the fastest-growing industrial areas, with over $100 billion spent in 2015. In the previous year, the wind industry installed more than the gas and coal sectors combined in the EU. It also has the installed capacity to power 87 million households or 15 percent of the region’s electrical demand. With such potential, the significance of the day increases enormously, as more people should be aware of the advantages of wind energy. This initiative is a collaboration between several countries.
Global Wind Day Events:
- People used to visit onshore and offshore wind farms.
- Join the campaign and get information about wind energy.
- In many cities, demonstration turbines have been installed.
- Workshops are organized.
- Wind parade
Let us tell you that the inaugural year of Global Wind Day was organized by EWEA in 2007. The main objective behind it was to coordinate the events organized by the National Wind Energy Associations and companies operating in the field of wind energy. In Europe, Wind Day reached about 18 countries and was attended by around 35,000 people.
- In 2008, GWD reached approximately 20 European countries and was attended by approximately 100,000 people.
- In 2009 EWEA joined forces with GWEC and coordinate the Global Wind Day event across the World. In 2009, around 300 events were organised in almost 35 countries and reached approx 1 million people.
- In Portugal in 2009, GWD was celebrated as a Wind Parade event.
- In year 2010, 220 events took place in 30 countries, including the display of a 29.5 metre (96.7 ft) wind turbine blade in Brussels, Belgium, next to the main building of the European Commission and European Council. More than 1 million people were reached by Global Wind Day communications around the world.
- For 2018, WindEurope and GWEC launched a global photo competition to capture the power of wind in the run up to GWD
- For 2019, WindEurope and GWEC launched the international photo competition “Future Wind” in the run up to Global Wind Day. The competition received over 600 photos from more than 50 countries.
- For 2023 WindEurope and GWEC organised the “Old turbines new furniture” exhibition showcasing innovative designer furniture made from old wind turbine parts.
Several events are organised around the world. Even in 2024, GWEC and WindEurope launched a global photo competition to capture the power of wind on GWD.
What is Wind energy?
The wind is moving air and is a form of energy. It is caused by differences in air pressure within our atmosphere. Under high pressure, air moves toward areas of low pressure. Let us tell you that the greater the difference in pressure, the faster the air flows. As we know that Cyclone Vayu may hit the Gujarat state. It is also the windstorm that may cause landfills. Winds can range from a light breeze on a hot summer day to tornadoes and hurricanes or cyclones with speeds of hundreds of kilometers per hour.
When we see Air, it does not seem like anything but during a windstorm, its presence can be seen. Wind may lift roofs off buildings, blow down power lines, accidents at highways, push cars, trucks etc.
How is Wind formed?
It is formed by the uneven heating of the Earth by the sun. You can’t see it but you can feel it. When there is a difference in atmospheric pressure winds are generated. Let us understand the phenomena:
At the Equator, due to sun water and land are warmer as any other part of the globe. Therefore, warm equatorial air rises higher into the atmosphere and migrates towards the poles. This is known as a low-pressure system. Now, at the same time, cooler or denser air moves over the surface of the earth towards the equator to replace the heated air. This is known as a high-pressure system. Winds generally blow from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas. And the boundaries between these two areas are known as the front. Various types of wind and weather patterns are caused between fronts. Like prevailing winds that blow from a single direction over a specific area if the Earth. And the areas where these prevailing winds meet are known as convergence zones.
Therefore, on 15 June, Global Wind Day is celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of wind energy.

Quotes:
- The Fuel in the Earth Will Be Exhausted in a Thousand or More Years, and Its Mineral Wealth, but Man Will Find Substitutes for These in the Winds, the Waves, the Sun’s Heat, and So Forth.
- Wind Is God’s Way of Balancing Heat. Wind Is the Way You Shift Heat From Areas Where It’s Hotter to Areas Where It’s Cooler. That’s What Wind Is.
- The wind is the expression of the air when it expresses its love for itself. Warm wishes on Global Wind Day to you.
