History:

India is the land of the biggest handloom industry. It is one of the most important sources of economy in rural and semi-urban areas. The day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement launched on 7th August 1905.

According to the official government website, “In 2015, the Government of India decided to designate the 7th of August every year, as the National Handloom Day. The first National Handloom Day was inaugurated on 7 August 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai.”

  • The 9th Anniversary of National Handloom Day aims to encourage & motivate Start-Ups and Entrepreneurs /agencies of the handloom sector. Indian citizens can share their journey/story of Entrepreneurship Development, again on the official website of the Government of India.

  • All the reel enthusiasts are encouraged by the Government of India to post a reel about their love for handloom. Participants need to submit a link to a video reel on the MyGov platform.

Other than the above initiatives, PM Narendra Modi will celebrate this day with 3000 handloom and khadi weavers, artisans and stakeholders from the textile & MSME sectors. As per the official website. He will also launch the e-portal of “भारतीय वस्त्र एवं शिल्प कोष” – a Repository of Textiles & Crafts that has been developed by National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
