Ireland breaks Guinness world record: Largest gathering of people dressed as snowmen

Newry, Northern Ireland – December 24, 2016 – The people of Newry have broken the Guinness world record for the world’s largest gathering of people dressed as snowmen; Newry sailed into the record books after it managed 398 people dressed as snowmen in one place.

The Guinness World Records world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as snowmen was 333, in an event organised by Hope House Children’s Hospices (UK) in Oswestry, Shropshire, UK, on 6 December 2009. The record attempt was made in conjunction with annual fundraising event held in Oswestry to raise funds for the Hospice.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most snowmen built in one hour; it is 2,036 and was achieved by Drama 24 Unhandy Handyman (Japan) at Zuriyama Observation Field, in Akabira, Hokkaido, Japan, on 28 February 2015.

Almost 400 people braved the winter weather – with the final snowfolk total of 398 easily beating the previous Guinness world record of 333.

Speaking as hundred of excited snowpeople thronged the Buttercrane for the Santa Parade that followed the world record bid, shopping centre manager Peter Murray told the Belfast Telegraph: “We’re absolutely delighted to break the Guinness World Record for world’s largest gathering of people dressed as snowmen with a figure of 398.
