How Paper is Made – Paper making is a very ancient art and was first practiced well over a thousand years ago, being originally invented by the Chinese.
Paper is made from fibrous vegetable substances such as wood, straw or rags.
This is ground into the tiniest fragments and beaten in water until it is reduced to pulp.
The pulp then floats on the surface of the water and a screen or mould is slid into the water below the floating pulp.
It is then lifted horizontally and the water drained through the fine mesh of the screen and an evenly distributed layer of pulp is left on the screen.
It will be found that the pulp consists of fibres of the pulp all matted and interwined.
When quite dry, the material on the screen is paper in its crude form.
