Jet Fighter

One of the latest aeroplanes now made for the Royal Air Force is the Midge. It has a speed of 600 m.p.h and is a beautiful jet fighter. Let us make of this handsome plane using the modern balsa wood that can be obtained at good toy shops. You will need the 1/32 in. thickness of wood, about 3 in. wide and nearly a yard long. You will find the important parts drawn out for you in the diagram and all you will have to do is to trace these outlines and transfer them on to the surface of the wood in soft pencil. Cut out the shapes very carefully, following the curves as accurately as you can.

Use cement for the gumming, this can be bought in handy tube form. First of all, gum the fuselage pieces, cementing these carefully together so that the slots match up. This is shown in the diagram at A. Look at the slots E and F. The long slot E is for the wings and the slot at the end, F, is to take the tail plane. Now fit the wing pieces B into slots E and gun gum securely, holding the wings until the cement is fast. Now gum the tail pieces C into slot F and hold carefully until fixed. It only remains to fit the fin D along the bottom of the plane as shown by the dotted lines on the diagram. Hold this carefully in position until the cement is quite dry. To give balance and ballast to the plane, push a small nail into the nose. This slight weight will do the trick.
