Love Will Cure This World! — George W Bush, the soon to be ex-president of USA hasn’t been a popular president. But he has been quite an entertainer because of his linguistic skills.
If you recall some of his statements, “I know what I believe. I will continue to articulate what I believe and what I believe—I believe what I believe is right,” they are hilariously funny. But it isn’t just funny to me but profoundly absurd since his lines are based on the word belief. Now one can either know or believe. Because belief is generally borrowed—it’s a piece of information acquired from other sources.
Priests are always asking us to believe in God. And people are believe these beliefs without even experiencing God or godliness anywhere. Strangely there are more definitions and beliefs than there are Gods and believers choose and follow a definition of their choice. The trouble arises when they become staunch believers and start fighting about which definition is the ultimate. Such believers cannot tolerate other believers. And that’s where the problem starts…
In one of his discourses, Osho says candidly: ‘Belief ’ is a dirty word! By belief you’re prevented from knowing and you aren’t helped. And it’s because of beliefs, a man is divided as a Christian, a Hindu or a Muslim.
It’s a belief that divides the world and creates wars. The moment you believe, you are no more one with humanity: You’re a Christian, a Hindu or a Muslim. And you will be continuously fighting for your belief.
Read this joke: A policeman was walking his beat when he saw two men fighting. A little boy standing alongside and crying copiously, “Daddy, Daddy!” The officer pulled the two men apart and, turning to the boy, asked, “Which one is your father, lad?” “I don’t know,”the boy said, rubbing tears from his eyes, “That’s what they’re fighting about.”
Osho elaborates: “Belief simply means you don’t know, yet you believe. A blind man believing in light, what can belief do? He doesn’t need a prophet or a messiah. What he needs is medicine or a surgeon for an eye operation, so that he can see. And do you believe in light? Nobody asks such questions—you know light is there. The question of belief is asked only when the thing is non-existential.”
In the name of religion or God, priests have been giving their followers belief systems which are inherently destructive. The real religious teaching can be only life-affirmative, a true reverence for all life. The real religious teaching can only be of love. It cannot mislead the followers into killing other humans. But the priests provoke followers with ideologies and call it belief !
Osho says: “Anybody who gives you a belief system is your enemy. You cannot see the truth and the desire to find truth disappears. But if all your belief systems are taken away from you, in the beginning, certainly, it’s bitter. I know the fear that will surface immediately. And only the search for truth and the experience of truth, not a belief is capable of healing your wounds.”
Cutting back to reality, the truth is in our heart, which is capable of healing not only our wounds but the cuts and bruises of this world. So, speak the language of the heart and learn to love, right away…Will you?
