Usha Vance, the wife of Donald Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance, is set to become the first Second Lady of Indian origin in the United States. Her family comes from Andhra Pradesh, India.

Although she was born and raised in suburban San Diego, there is a hope rising in her ancestral village that her historic role will bring positive changes to their land.

Who is Usha Vance?

Usha Vance was born to Indian parents who moved to the U.S. from Andhra Pradesh in 1986. She grew up in a suburb of San Diego, California. Since moving overseas more than 50 years ago, her family has supported the village by giving land for temples including the Goddess Bala Seeta, Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, and Sai Baba temples, which were constructed for the benefit of the community.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Yale University and later completed a Master of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge as a Gates Scholar.

Usha Chilukuri Vance: Personal Life

Usha and JD Vance met while attending Yale Law School, and they were married in 2014 with a Hindu ceremony. They have three kids together.

Usha has been a trustworthy supporter of JD Vance throughout his political career, frequently joining him on the campaign trail for the Ohio Senate. She also provided insights for JD Vance’s popular memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which illuminates the hardships of rural America and was later made into a Ron Howard film.

Career and Editorial Roles:

Before becoming the potential Second Lady, Usha held important editorial positions at the Yale Journal of Law & Technology and The Yale Law Journal, where she worked as Managing Editor and Executive Development Editor, respectively.

Usha Vance currently works as a corporate litigator at a law firm in San Francisco. Her legal career also includes working as a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
