Mr. India is a science fiction film best known for the villain, Mogambo. Released in 1987, Mr. India is a cult classic superhero film directed by Shekhar Kapur and produced by Boney Kapoor. The lead roles have been portrayed by Anil Kapoor as Arun Verma and Mr. India, Sridevi as Seema Sohni and Amrish Puri as Mogambo. The film is till today remembered for Sridevi’s Miss Hawa Hawaii performance and Amrish Puri’s quote “Mogambo khush hua”. Mr. India Story: Children’s Day Films
The film begins with violence being escalated in India. The central villain has been revealed as Mogambo (Amrish Puri). He is a brilliant yet insane General whose only aim is to conquer India. He is informed by two henchmen, Teja (Ajit Vachani) and Daaga (Sharat Saxena) about the progress of subversive activities against India. Enters Arun Verma (Anil Kapoor), an orphan who looks after a dozen orphaned children in a large rented old house. The kids are taken care of by Arun’s cook and caretaker Calendar (Satish Kaushik).
Arun is heavily under debt and decides to rent out the sea-facing room. He meets newspaper reporter, Seema Sohni (Sridevi) and makes her his tenant. Seema dislikes children but soon discovers the kids. Though she feels betrayed and gets angry, but soon calms down on hearing the plight and nobility of Arun’s cause. The movie takes a turning point when Arun receives a letter from family friends, Dr. Sinha (Ashok Kumar) revealing about a device that Arun’s father had created which can make the user turn invisible.
With the help of the directions stated in the letter, Arun along with one of his wards, Jugal (Aftab Shivdasani) enter his father’s laboratory and find the device. The device is a gold watch which when activated can turn the wearer invisible to the naked eye. However, it has one flaw. The wearer becomes visible when red light is focused on the subject. The device is kept under secret by Arun and Jugal. Seema overhears a suspicious conversation and goes to a lavish party hosted by Teja and Daaga. Seema disguises as a Hawaiian dancer but is exposed.
Arun enters styling himself as Mr. India and saves Seema. Seema gets romantically attached to her rescuer, Mr. India. He manages to defeat several of Mogambo’s men in different encounters. Mogambo learns about Mr. India and gets enraged and intrigued. Towards the end, Mogambo captures Arun, Seema, Calendar and the orphaned children. On threatening to drop two kids in the pit of concentrated acid, Arun volunteers himself to be Mr. India. They all are sent to the dungeons but Arun manages to escape. He sends the kids along with Calendar while Arun and Seema decide to fight Mogambo.
Mogambo activates four gigantic missiles to destroy the entire India. Arun encounters with Mogambo resulting in a fighting scene. He overcomes Mogambo and deactivates the missiles. But Mogambo states that preventing the missiles from the launch would result in exploding at the very spot. Eventually, Arun, Seems, Calendar and the kids escape while Mogambo is destroyed along with his fortress. At the end, Arun’s identity is still a secret for most people while he leads a normal life as before.
