Bollywood Bahus Fasting in fashion: From the ideal ‘bahus’ of daily TV soaps to the glamorous daughters-in-law of Bollywood, Karva Chauth is an extremely popular festival amongst the married bunch, who see it as a time to bond with one another. The celebrations begin a day before with mehendi nights and culminate the next day with a grand feast amongst close family and friends, after a peek at the moon. This auspicious day is observed with enormous enthusiasm across the country and amongst Indians who are overseas.

According to many women, it is also a great occasion to dress in their best traditional designer outfits and flaunt some shimmering and diamond jewellery. Married tinsel town celebrities like Sonali Bendre, Shilpa Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Twinkle Khanna to name a few, are known to dress up in traditional fineries and get together fun filled evening of festivities. Like them, a of women host pre Karva Chauth parties where they indulge in music, dance and games cards, karaoke, quizzes etc. Female catches with a few ladies who share their experience.

Meeta Gutgutia, director creative head of Ferns N Petals, starts Karva Chauth preparations a week before to avoid any last minute hassles.

Despite being married for eighteen years, she continues to celebrate this festival with great fervor.

Her mother-in-law and eight year-old daughter Mannat her in the revels. On this day, ordinary sari will just not like Bollywood’s top fashionista Shilpa Shetty, Meeta is a big of JJ Valaya’s and Tarun Tahiliani’s creations and prefers picking a classic red and white saree for the festival. “I compliment it with authentic Kundan jewellery and plain glass bangles,” she completes. When it comes to make up, she likes to keep it simple and natural. “Decorating my house with fresh flowers is my way to welcome auspiciousness on this day. I prefer Indian flowers done up in a contemporary way for the occasion,” advises this flower lover goes to work on that special day to hunger the traditional accessories bangles for wear getting picking to keep her mind of food and hunger pangs.

The ethnic route

Smriti Kumar, director of Mango celebrates the occasion much like the first bahu of Bollywood, Aishwarya Bachchan, picking traditional attire complete with accessories like bindis , bangles and jewellery. Dressing up Karva Chauth in ethnic wear excites Smriti, “from getting my mehndi done to picking up a bindi , I love everything about this festival. Since I am a working woman, most days I am dressed in semi casual western wear. On this day, I love getting all decked up in sarees or heavy anarkalis teamed with dazzling jewellery.” Smriti took to fasting as early as her courtship years, “I kept my first fast when my husband and I were only dating each other. I planned it as a surprise for him and to my delight, he presented me with a sparkling diamond nose pin,” she gushes. “Like every year, I will host a big Karva Chauth party for my friends. We usually chat, play cards and indulge in some fun karaoke. It keeps us engaged and helps us sail through this long day comfortably,” she shares.

Bollywood Bahus: Pious reds

Dr. Geetika Mittal Gupta, 29, defines Karva Chauth as ‘a great occasion to revisit the vows of marriage and cherish the special bond’. A traditional red sari, jewellery gifted by her husband and the red chunni given by her mother-in-law on her wedding day are Karva Chauth staples for the past three years.

Her preparations for the day start with buying gifts for her in-laws and friends followed by a beautifying regime of pedi-manis, an energizing blow, a relaxing massage and a pampering facial.

Besides dressing up, she looks forward to meeting friends and relatives in the evening and this year, she is going to host a ‘henna & bangles’ party, at her wellness centre ISSAC in New Delhi.

Bright is right: Bollywood Bahus

A devoted home maker, Urvashi Bhatia is super enthusiastic to keep her 43 rd fast this Karva Chauth.

Much like Twinkle Khanna who refers lighter and brighter Indian attire, Bhatia’s first choice of dress for the occasion usually involves a bright colour. “Besides the traditional shringaar, I also like to make different kinds of chignons since I am blessed with long hair. I dress up but stay away from going over the top” she shares. Unlike many women, she doesn’t expect her husband to shower her with expensive gifts. “He is very sincere and kind hearted what else can I ask for. Every year, I pray for the peace and prosperity of the family,” declares the affectionate grandmother.

Chic and trendy

For designer Renyu Tandon, effortless Indian fashion is what she likes. Her taste in fashion on this auspicious day is very similar to the likes of Sonali Bendre or Raveena Tandon.

She sticks to elegant churidaars and classic Indian ensembles that are both chic and trendy, complimented by bangles and a red dupatta. “Though I have received a lot of invites of Karva Chauth party from friends, I haven’t decided on anything yet. My daughter Nikhita takes the responsibility of buying sargi for me. In the evening, we all sit together in drawing room and wait for the moon, which is followed by a dinner together,” she states.
