It is a ten-day carnival, when people in Kerala indulge themselves in the preparations for welcoming their legendary king – Mahabali. Songs are sung during the festive season, to spread good cheer and celebrate the festival.

Certain songs are sung exclusively during Vallamkali (snake boat race) competitions and swing rides.
