No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. The walls of this temple dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi in Sripuram are made of solid gold. Conceived and designed by Sri Narayani Amma, head of the Sri Narayani Peedam in Vellore, it is his version of the Taj Mahal a labour of ‘unconditional love’ and his ‘gift to mankind’. The temple was consecrated on Friday. 1.5 tonnes of gold went into making this marvel – 300 crore is how much it cost to build 800 craftsmen worked for 6 years to give it shape The entire structure, barring the pathways, is gold plated The temple has a Rajagopuram resembling the Tirumala temple, with 36 pillars The central chandelier is also made of gold in a special lighting arrangement, the temple shimmers and shines at night.
