Musk is produced by the male musk-deer (Moschidae family), found in the wet mountain forests of the Himalayas. A gland in the abdomen of the deer produces musk, a pungent oily jelly which is used in perfumes to make the scent last longer. The musk-deer has become an endangered species because it is killed for the gland.
