When you look up into the sky on a clear night, you see lots of stars twinkling there. The sun is a star, and it shines by its own light, which is formed by bursts of energy from the inside of the sun rising to the surface. The sun is extremely hot so hot that it would turn anything as solid as a piece of steel. We don’t know very much about the sun, because of course we can’t get close enough to it to do tests, as we have on the moon. But what we do know is that the sun is a very average sized star, and that it is not abnormally hot when compared to other. We also know that if the sun stopped shining, the earth would be destroyed because the sun’s heat keeps everything alive. Fortunately it contains enough energy to carry on shining for billion of years to come.
