In a compelling teaser released for the upcoming political drama “Article 370,” Bollywood actor Yami Gautam steps into the role of an intelligence officer determined to confront terrorism in the tumultuous regions of Jammu & Kashmir. Scheduled to hit theaters on February 23, the film, backed by Jio Studios & B62 Studios, promises a gripping narrative inspired by true events that have significantly influenced the destiny of Kashmir.

The teaser, unveiled recently, showcases Yami in a fierce portrayal, dissecting the roots of terrorism in Kashmir. Contrary to popular belief, she asserts that the turmoil is not a result of demands for “azadi” or freedom but rather a sinister business perpetuated by corrupt politicians. Yami boldly claims that true justice cannot prevail until the special status granted to Jammu & Kashmir through Article 370 is revoked.

In a dramatic climax of the teaser, Yami is seen pointing a gun at an unidentified figure, her face marked with blood. The revelation follows the announcement that Article 370 would be abrogated, signaling the end of the special status for Jammu & Kashmir and its transformation into Union Territories.

Directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, “Article 370” explores the relentless efforts of an intelligence agent, played by Yami Gautam, to dismantle terrorism in Kashmir by rendering Article 370 ineffective. The film, produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Aditya Dhar, and Lokesh Dhar, is set against the backdrop of the historic revocation of Article 370 by the Central government on August 5, 2019.

Yami, renowned for her roles in films like “Badlapur,” “Uri: The Surgical Strike,” and “Bala,” among others, brings her talent to the forefront once again. Notably, the film is a collaboration between Yami and her husband, director Aditya Dhar, who previously directed her in the 2019 action blockbuster “Uri: The Surgical Strike.” The duo tied the knot in 2021.

Movie Review:

When a film finds a mention at a political rally even before its release, one knows which direction it is going to take. We are well acquainted with the genre ‘P’ (propaganda) by now. The opening voiceover by Ajay Devgn bashing Jawaharlal Nehru, following it up with a backgrounder on Article 370 and a clinical summing up of the Kashmir movement leaves no room for doubt either.

Though it has the vibes of ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ and ‘The Kashmir Files’, ‘Article 370’ is more of a refresher course which the makers think we need just before the Lok Sabha elections. Starting from Nehru’s “misdoings” in 1947 to the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, it packs a lesson in history, civics and the Constitution, which all conveniently amalgamate to highlight the Union Government’s resolute leadership to bring Kashmir into the nation’s fold in the true sense!

This visually appealing refresher course, which clocks 2 hours and 40 minutes, is divided into six chapters with sub-heads which sum up the actions, reactions and anything that falls in that particular segment.

It begins on a note of a thriller as Kashmiri intelligence officer Zooni Haksar (Yami) gathers information on militant commander Burhan Wani and eliminates him in a covert operation. We get to see her rebellious streak, which gets her in trouble with the authorities. But it’s the same rebellious act, a testimony to her action prowess and shrewd mind, that brings her to the notice of a senior bureaucrat in the PMO, Rajeshwari (Priyamani). Rajeshwari shepherds the Centre’s plan to abrogate Article 370.

Together, these two fictional characters pave the path for the unnamed but easily recognisable Prime Minister (Arun Govil) and Home Minister (Kiran Karmarkar) to strip J&K of its special status. Zooni goes about springing one surprise attack after the other on militants who attempt to foil their plan, and Rajeshwari finds crucial clauses that allow the government to take on its detractors in Parliament.

But the narrative is not about these two super ladies, but righting a 70-year-old “historical wrong”. And that is never easy. The government has to deal with not just Pulwama-like incidents, hired stone-pelters and Pakistan-backed separatists, but also venal politicians who have uncanny resemblance to Mehbooba Mufti (Divya Seth) and Farooq Abdullah (Raj Zutshi). In the process, the makers give the ruling party quite a few opportunities for chest thumping!

Director Aditya Suhas Jamhbale and cinematographer Siddharth Vasani manage to present the first hour of the film as a gripping thriller, with good performances by Yami and Priyamani.

Zooni’s tragic backstory has an emotional connect, but once the political agenda takes over, the narrative gets slack with inconsistencies and the characters become caricature-ish. In the roles of two former CMs, Raj Zutshi and Divya Seth are laughable. We wonder if Kiran Karmakar’s imitation of Amit Shah’s body language and dialogue delivery would amuse the Union Home Minister!

Even if it does not, the film has enough to keep the heroes it has been modelled on in good humour — incompetent Opposition leaders, dim-wit journalists and over-the-top villains. They have conveniently clubbed the moderates and extremists into the same category, for the sake of simplicity, we guess! The only solace is that the makers practise enough restraint to not lace ‘Article 370’ with the in-the-face kind of jingoism that ‘Uri’ and all other films of this genre are known for.

Once Article 370 is done and dusted, newspaper headlines tell us how Kashmir has become a paradise, not just in the economic growth index but also in terms of peace and social order. The movie ends with a note as to what would the Prime Minister do next? It sounds odd, considering that it’s only a movie, and not a Parliament bulletin, but this is one question which only ‘Uri’ maker Aditya Dhar, one of the producers and writers of ‘Article 370’, can answer.

अरुण गोविल ने ट्वीट करते हुए जानकारी दी कि इस फिल्म में नरेंद्र मोदी का किरदार वो अदा करेंगे। उन्होंने पहले डॉयलॉग लिखा, “पूरा का पूरा कश्मीर, भारत देश का हिस्सा था, है और रहेगा।

‘आर्टिकल 370’ पर फिल्म आने वाली है। इस फिल्म में दिखाया जाएगा कि जम्मू-कश्मीर के हालात सुधारने के लिए क्या-क्या कदम उठाए गए। इस फिल्म में जहाँ एक्ट्रेस के तौर पर यामी गौतम दिख रही हैं। वहीं सबसे अहम रोल में यहाँ प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी का भी किरदार होगा, जिसे निभाया है अरुण गोविल ने।

अरुण गोविल ने ट्वीट करते हुए जानकारी दी कि इस फिल्म में नरेंद्र मोदी का किरदार वो अदा करेंगे। उन्होंने पहले डॉयलॉग लिखा, “पूरा का पूरा कश्मीर, भारत देश का हिस्सा था, है और रहेगा। इसके बाद उन्होंने लिखा, “आर्टिकल 370 फिल्म जिसमें मैंने आदरणीय प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की भूमिका निभाई है। फिल्म 23 फरवरी को रिलीज हो रही है जरूर देखिएगा। जय श्रीराम।”

बता दें कि आर्टिकल 370 का ट्रेलर रिलीज हो गया है। इस ट्रेलर में अरुण गोविल पीएम मोदी के किरदार में कुछ डॉयलॉग बोलते हैं। इसमें वो पुलवामा के बलिदानियों को नमन करने के दौरान कहते हैं- “इस कश्मीर ने बहुत पीड़ा झेली है। हम इसे इस हाल में नहीं छोड़ेंगे।” अगले डॉयलॉग में वो कहते हैं- “हम आर्टिकल 370 को खत्म करेंगे।” तीसरा डॉयलॉग है- “अगर हमें इतिहास लिखना है तो किसी न किसी को तो इतिहास बनाना पड़ेगा।”

इस ट्वीट पर लोगों ने प्रतिक्रिया दी है। लोग उनका यह अवतार देख खुश हैं। सबका कहना है कि रामानंद सागर की रामायण में भगवान राम के किरदार में अरुण गोविल को देखने के बाद लगा था कि अब वो किसी और कैरेक्टर में अच्छे नहीं लगेंगे लेकिन धीरे-धीरे यह सोच बदल गई। लोगों का कहना है कि अब तक सबसे सटीक अगर कोई नरेंद्र मोदी के कैरेक्टर में फिट बैठता दिख रहा है तो वो अरुण गोविल हैं।

गौरतलब है कि गुरुवार को आर्टिकल 370 फिल्म का ट्रेलर रिलीज हुआ था। 23 फरवरी को फिल्म भी आएगी। फिल्म में यामी गौतम ने एक NIA अधिकारी का किरदार निभाया है। ये फिल्म जम्मू कश्मीर में आतंकवाद के बढ़ने और फिर मोदी सरकार द्वारा अनुच्छेद-370 को निरस्त किए जाने के ऐतिहासिक फैसले पर केंद्रित है। यामी गौतम के पति आदित्य धर ने मोहन ठाकर के साथ मिल कर ‘आर्टिकल 370’ की कहानी लिखी है। फिल्म के ट्रेलर को अच्छी प्रतिक्रिया मिल रही है।

ये फिल्म मुस्लिम देशों की आँख में खटकने लगी है। खाड़ी देशों के 6 में से 5 देशों कुवैत, ओमान, सऊदी अरब, कतर और बहरीन में इस फिल्म पर बैन लगा दिया गया है।

भारत सरकार ने जम्मू-कश्मीर से आर्टिकल-370 को हटाया था, तो पाकिस्तान ने दुनिया भर में जमकर हल्ला मचाया। हालाँकि उसके हल्ले के बावजूद उसे कुछ खास समर्थन नहीं मिला। अब इस पूरे मुद्दे पर आर्टिकल-370 नाम की फिल्म आई है, जो बॉक्स ऑफिस पर झंडे गाड़ रही है। इस फिल्म ने शुरुआती तीन दिनों में ही करीब 26 करोड़ का बिजनेस कर लिया। इस बीच, खबर सामने आ रही है कि खाड़ी देशों के 6 देशों में से 5 देशों ने आर्टिकल 370 फिल्म पर बैन लगा दिया है।

न्यूज18 की रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, आर्टिकल 370 फिल्म सिनेमा घरों में बेहतरीन प्रदर्शन कर रही है। घरेलू बॉक्स ऑफिस पर इस फिल्म ने शुक्रवार, शनिवार और रविवार को कुल मिलाकर 25.45 करोड़ की कमाई कर डाली है। वर्ल्ड वाइड ये कलेक्शन 35-36 करोड़ का बताया जा रहा है। खुद पीएम मोदी ने अपने भाषण में इस फिल्म की तारीफ करते हुए इसका उल्लेख किया था। इस बीच, ये फिल्म मुस्लिम देशों की आँख में खटकने लगी है। खाड़ी देशों के 6 में से 5 देशों कुवैत, ओमान, सऊदी अरब, कतर और बहरीन में इस फिल्म पर बैन लगा दिया गया है। हालाँकि मुख्य देश संयुक्त अरब अमीरात (UAE) ने ऐसा कोई कदम नहीं उठाया है।

आर्टिकल 370 की सफलता पर आदित्य धर ने एएनआई से बातचीत में कहा, “हम केवल कड़ी मेहनत कर सकते थे, जो हमने पूरे दिल से किया। एक बार फिल्म रिलीज होने के बाद, हम वास्तव में कुछ नहीं कर सकते। हम बस अपना काम सौंप देते हैं। दर्शक ही इसे सारा प्यार और सम्मान देते हैं। इस फिल्म में हमने कई वास्तविक जीवन के लोगों का प्रतिनिधित्व किया है जिन्होंने अनुच्छेद 370 को निरस्त करने के लिए बहुत मेहनत की है। हमारा मुख्य उद्देश्य वास्तविक जीवन के संघर्ष को उपयुक्त रूप से दिखाना था।”

उन्होंने आगे कहा, “हमने इस तरह की प्रतिक्रिया और हमारी फिल्म को मिलने वाले भारी प्यार की कल्पना नहीं की थी। जिन लोगों ने हमारी फिल्म को एजेंडा या प्रचार के रूप में देखा, हमने उनसे ही पूछा था इस पर निर्णय लेने से पहले फिल्म देखें। अनुच्छेद 370 को हटाना आजादी के बाद किसी भी सरकार द्वारा लिया गया सबसे बड़ा फैसला था।”

इस फिल्म के बॉक्स ऑफिस पर जोरदार प्रदर्शन के बीच यानी गौतम ने सोशल मीडिया पर पोस्ट करके बताया है कि जब हम इस फिल्म को बना रहे थे, तब काफी लोगों ने कहा कि फिल्म नहीं चलेगी, लेकिन हम अपने इरादे से डिगे नहीं और नतीजा सामने है।

यामी गौतम ने एक्स पर लिखा, “जब हम ‘आर्टिकल 370’ बना रहे थे, तो कई लोगों ने हमसे कहा कि यह फिल्म दर्शकों के बीच नहीं चलेगी। ये फिल्म बहुत टेक्निकल और पॉलिटिकल है, लेकिन हम साहस के साथ आगे बढ़े क्योंकि हम जानते थे कि विरोध करने वाले हमारे दर्शकों को कम आँक रहे थे। उन्हें बिल्कुल ग़लत साबित करने के लिए आप सभी का धन्यवाद। हमारी छोटी सी फिल्म को इतना प्यार देने के लिए बड़े दिल से बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद। हम विनम्र हैं और आप सभी के सदैव आभारी रहेंगे। धन्यवाद! जय हिन्द!”
