Bad Cop: Disney+ Hotstar fiction Series

Anurag Kashyap, Gulshan Devaiah to Headline Disney+ Hotstar’s ‘Bad Cop’, Fremantle India’s First Fiction Series

Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap (‘Leo’) and Gulshan Devaiah (‘Duranga’) will headline Disney+ Hotstar Indian series ‘Bad Cop’.

The series marks the fiction series debut for Fremantle India, hitherto known for reality shows “India’s Got Talent” and “Indian Idol.”

The series, adapted from RTL’s German show “Bad Cop: Kriminell Gut” (2017) by Rensil D’Silva (“Bambai Meri Jaan”), is directed by Aditya Datt (“Crakk”). Devaiah plays Karan, a fierce cop trying to chase down Kazbe (Kashyap) a villain more powerful and deadly than him while simultaneously managing his personal relationships. The cast also includes Harleen Sethi (“Kohrra”), Saurabh Sachdeva (“Animal”) and Aishwarya Sushmita (“Khakee: The Bihar Chapter”).

Aradhana Bhola, managing director, Fremantle India said: “We are excited to begin a brand new chapter in Fremantle India’s journey of content creation with our very first drama web series ‘Bad Cop.’ To bring the Indian version of this format, originally created by RTL, alive for Disney+ Hotstar, we worked with the best of talent across the board. Writer Rensil D’Silva reimagined the intriguing yet quirky world in an Indian setting, the rooted characters were brought to life by a talented ensemble cast led by Gulshan Devaiah, Harleen Sethi, Saurabh Sachdeva and Anurag Kashyap under the able direction of Aditya Datt who above all, brought his mass action sensibilities to the series.”

Datt added: “It’s a hardcore classic cop vs villain chase, but with a fun twist that will leave you intrigued till the end. The series has high octane action, eccentric characters and is a complete entertainer.”

Kashyap said: “I have created a lot of characters that are gory, quirky, dark and many more things but believe it or not it was difficult for me to be one. Kazbe is someone who doesn’t think too much before doing anything, he just does it. He is a dreadful, eccentric, nefarious and a quintessential villain. I had to bite into the intricacies of this character and make it my own.”

Devaiah added: “I was familiar with Aditya Datt’s style since I had worked with him before. He is very straightforward and wants to make an entertaining, cool show that people will enjoy. The action was a bit tough, particularly the running, which challenged me because I’m not used to doing action and I’m not physically built for it. Overall, it was fun working with Fremantle India and Disney+ Hotstar. Moreover, it was enjoyable to perform with Anurag, who had only directed and produced my films earlier, but it was fun to do scenes and action with him. I never expected to be acting with him.”

Bad Cop Series Review:

Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave 2 stars for the series and wrote “It has no paucity of thrills and chases. But owing to the mechanical, formulaic manner of the mounting, the technical finesse that is on show is of a strictly superficial variety.” Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express stated “Snappy dialogues and action sequences abound, and like I said, each episode wraps quickly.” Deepa Gahlot for Rediff.com felt the series is “not unwatchable” and opined “Even Hussain Dalal’s pungent dialogue, with profanity considerably toned down, does not help lift this humourless show.”

Shilajit Mitra for The Hindu opined “The performances, likewise, feel second-guessed.” Reviewing for India Today, Zinia Bandyopadhyay gave 2 stars out of 5 and wrote “The series stops at being a masala potboiler that does not intrigue you. The screenplay is feeble, and the sequences are too formulaic for it to turn up as a decent thriller.” Troy Ribeiro of The Free Press Journal gave some positive review on the series, stating “Yes, the writing is weak, but the dialogues written by Hussain Dalal are worth mentioning. They are dramatically classic and shine in the narrative.” Sushmita Dey of Times Now wrote “It may provide fleeting entertainment”. Suparna Sharma of The Week wrote ” Datt, with the help of talented actors, smart cinematography and editing, is able to create interesting characters and infuse some tension in the plot.”
