Bandaa Singh Chaudhary: Movie Overview

Set during 1971 Indo-Pak war’s aftermath, communal riots in Punjab. A man fights for rights, family’s survival amid division, violence. An ordinary man fights to protect his family’s rights and survive amidst deep divisions and violence.

Even a common man can become a warrior if you try to take away his home. Meet Bandaa Singh Chaudhary, a simple man who fought against all odds. This is a fight for justice, this a fight for home.

This film, set in the 80s when Punjab saw the most turbulent times in the recent history, is, in their words, the labour of love.

I always take up stories that people know but do not talk about. Bandaa Singh Chaudhary is one such story,” opened up Saxena, who has to his credit films like Phullu and Patiala Dreamz.

Inspired by true events, extensive research went into the story. With such a sensitive topic, Saxena wanted to be thorough. “Punjab saw the turbulent 80s. To get the real picture, we interviewed thousands of families in villages, and read newspaper reports,” said Saxena.

There was another reason, a personal one! His mother is a Sardarni. He revealed, “I had to be careful not to hurt religious sentiments of any section. If something was to go wrong, my mother would have taken me to task.”

Arshad Warsi plays the titular role, a Hindu character, who in the face of threats isn’t ready to give up on his home, his land. The film was conceived by Saxena with Manish Mishra as producer. Arbaaz joined the party later. While working on a film with Meher Vij’s husband Manav Vij, he heard about film and came on board. “I found it to be a relatable story and I took the opportunity to be part of it,” Arbaaz shared.

As Warsi had to give this promotional tour a miss due to prior commitments, Saxena filled in for him. “Versatility is Arshad Warsi’s biggest strength. He has never played such a character, nor has Meher. But they make the best lead pair!”

Meher spoke about her role, “My character gets a full arc. The film is full of drama, light moments, romance and tension, and my character get to play many shades.”

Also present were actor Sachin Negi and singers Rahul Jain and Jay Mishra. The duo crooned their numbers Eena Sona and Dil Mureeda, respectively. Rahul composed and sang three songs for the film. Jay shared, “I got a chance to sing with Sunidhi Chauhan which was an honour and opportunity for me.”

While Saxena’s Phullu sensitised a subject like sanitary pads, Bandaa Singh Chaudhary is a salute to a common man’s resilient spirit. “The film is rooted in Punjab. And it will inspire anyone in their life, in struggles big and small,” said the director.

The films hits cinemas on October 25.

Movie Review:

An untold story of revolutionary hero of Punjab

India faced many crises in the 1970s. Events like the Indo-Pakistani War, the Emergency, and the creation of Bangladesh touched the country deeply beyond its borders. But this turbulence was not limited to the borders only; many important events were happening inside the country as well. Banda Singh Chaudhary is a story of Punjab in the 1970s and 80s, which narrates the events and circumstances of that time.

The film presents an inspirational story which shows the bravery and struggle of an ordinary man. It is set in a village in Punjab where Banda Singh (Arshad Warsi), who is not originally from there, stands up against local terrorists. His fight is not just for the safety of his village, but also against a larger problem that is trying to divide the people. The film has deep emotional aspects, which make it even more effective.

The cinematography leaves a good impression, though jump cuts in some places are a bit distracting. In a crucial scene, when Banda shoots a terrorist in the leg, it very well depicts his courage and good intentions. This scene shows that Banda wants peace even if he has to take up arms, which further strengthens his personality. The background score enhances the emotions, but the music of the film seems somewhat distracting and useless.

All the actors have performed well. Arshad Warsi has played his role as Banda Singh Chaudhary effectively. Meher Vij has completely immersed herself in the character of Lalli (Banda’s wife). Other actors like Jeevanshu Ahluwalia and Alisha Chopra have also done a great job in their roles as neighbors of Banda Singh.

Overall, Banda Singh Chaudhary is an important story that should definitely be watched, especially by those who love inspirational stories.
