Bigil Movie Review:
With Bigil, director Atlee has satisfied both the die-hard fans of Thalapathy Vijay and the sports drama genre. The first half of the film is purely aimed at the masses in which Vijay gets an awesome entry scene, songs, romantic track, comedy sequences and punchlines. And in the father role, as gangster Rayappan, he shines. The father-son sentiments and a riveting interval block set the stage for a sports drama in the second half.
Rayappan (Vijay) is an aged gangster in North Chennai, who believes that football is an important tool to motivate neighbourhood youngsters to lead a good, clean life. He encourages his son Michael aka Bigil (Vijay) and motivates him and friends to play at the National level. But there is a twist which changes Bigil’s life and he leaves football forever.
An unfortunate injury to his good friend and football coach Kathir (Kathir), forces Bigil to take up the former’s role to train the Tamil Nadu Women’s Football team. His love interest Angel (Nayanthara) joins the team as a physiotherapist and the rest of the film is all about how Bigil leads the football team to victory. He also settles the score with Sharma (Jackie Shroff), a businessman and head of football association.
Bigil’s biggest attraction is Vijay. While he carries the first half with his matured performance as the stammering and good-hearted Rayappan, coach Michael completely owns the film with his emotional performance in the second half. The scene where he motivates the young football team is pure class.
His performance melts our hearts and brings tears in a few motivational scenes in the second half of the film. The pre-climax episode in which Vijay provokes the anger of the young girls is sure to bring the roof down. For Bigil, Vijay has given his heart and soul. In the first half, star Vijay shines and actor Vijay excels in the second half.
Among the women, Varsha and Rebba Monica bring in the emotional quotient. Varsha plays a woman who sacrifices her football dream for her husband and society whereas Rebba plays an acid attack survivor. Robo Shankar’s daughter Indraja gets an important scene in the final game, the other two girls who grab our attention are Indhuja and Amritha Iyer. Kathir in a small role shines.
Nayanthara looks like a million bucks with her perfect make-up and impeccable style. Her cute romance scenes in the first half and her performance in the scene where she speaks to Varsha’s husband about women empowerment is a delight. She has a smouldering presence and is never lost even in scenes in which she has nothing to do.
GK Vishnu’s camera work is phenomenal especially the football matches. AR Rahman’s inspiring theme music and the background score elevate the emotional scenes in the film. On the downside, the sports angle is quite predictable and the villains are cliched. The film could have been shortened by 15 minutes.
To conclude, Bigil relies squarely on the charm of its leading man and Vijay dives into the character with an enthusiasm we haven’t seen before. It is a paisa vasool mass, sports-action-entertainer which is sure to be enjoyed by the masses and family audiences.
A perfect Diwali outing with ur friends and family.
