A man and a woman SIFRA fall in love with each other and the man decide to introduce SIFRA to his family, but trouble ensues for the man as he learns that SIFRA is actually a robot.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya:

It is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language science fiction romantic comedy film written and directed by Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah, in their directorial debuts. Produced by Maddock Films and Jio Studios, the film stars Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.

Principal photography commenced in October 2022 and ended in April 2023. The film is scheduled for release theatrically on 9 February 2024.

It was reported in August 2022 that Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon are set to collaborate for Dinesh Vijan’s next robot romcom film. The filming began in October 2022 and ended in April 2023 with the launch of first look poster. The title of the film was revealed in January 2024.

The music of the film is composed by Tanishk Bagchi, Sachin–Jigar and Mitraz. The first single titled “Laal Peeli Akhiyaan”, an adaptation of a Rajasthani song of the same name, was released on 12 January 2024.

The upcoming title track will be a remake of the song “Teri Baaton (Your Words)” from the 2004 album Storyteller by the Canadian singer Raghav.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, delivers a unique blend of romance and commentary on modern love, with surprising twists and standout performances.

It’s complicated. And yet so breezy! The weird title notwithstanding, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is a joyride. Original and unexplored, the plot is a pleasurable potpourri of flavourful fantasy as well as a mordant comment on loneliness and the search for a perfect soulmate.

Is that even possible in today’s day and age? It is, it is! Provided you are okay with a robotic partner who will say yes when you want.

The concept of crackling chemistry between a robot and a human being is inconceivably audacious. Who would have thought that this sweet cuddlesome concoction would lunge towards being a game-changer and actually get there, give or take some negligible hiccups, like the incurably annoying Great Indian Middle-class Family with every member of a cartoon without CGs.

I wish the co-writers/directors Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah would have focussed more on the lead couple than the rumbustious family of motormouthed buas and chachis, played by actors from daily soaps in the 1990s like Grusha Kapoor, Rakesh Bedi and Rajesh Kumar. Someone should read them out their expiry date. They try to inject a brisk bubbly bantering atmosphere to what is essentially a love story between a man who won’t settle for anything less than the perfect mate, and a robot who is not allowed to show human feelings.

But hell, who can predict what happens in love?! As a lovestruck robot, Kriti Sanon is bang-on: she wears her robotic expression with a hint of sensuousness making her character SIFRA dispassionate and spicy at the same time.

Shahid Kapoor in his most exuberant extroverted role in a long time, lets himself go to give himself(and the audience) a gala time. He should do this more often. There is nothing that he can’t do, including romance a robot as if it were Raquel Welch reloaded.

The scenes between Aryan and SIFRA are sensibly straight-faced, as though to suggest that what we are watching is not to be taken too seriously, but not to be dismissed as outlandish either. Sanon and Kapoor burn up the screen with their far-from-robotic chemistry. The third actor I really liked for her unconventional grace, is Dimple Kapadia’s Urmila, a robot engineer. She seems to get what to the core mischievousness of the film’s theme with her tongue firmly in her cheek.

By the way, Dimple’s Urmila has a sister called Sharmila. Just saying.

Consciously or unconsciously Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya(I still don’t know why the film is called that)pays a backhanded tribute to Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson in HER. Not that this airy film aspires to explore the angst of a single man with the fury of HER. This one tells us, to take it easy. Sooner or later, the right partner will show up. Even if she is not quite what you thought she would be. Don’t leave the theatre until the end credits. There is a surprise guest appearance at the finale. And no, she is not a robot.
