A Distant Dream – Salil Dhawan

Poor

Walking down the street one day,
My eyes met an ugly sight,
Over a single piece of bread,
Two boys and a dog were having a fight.
Petrified I was, to see that scene.

It was too hard to believe that
Life could be so ugly and mean.
It put my head in a whirl,
The marrow in my bones stirred.

We are marching into the 21st century so we say,
But poverty and hunger still hold their sway.
Seven five year plans have come and gone,
But shadow of scarcity still lingers on,
Food for all is a distant dream,
When, Oh when will this dream be redeemed?
