The United Nations recognises the unique power of sports. Sports transcend language, culture, and socioeconomic backgrounds. They bring people together in a spirit of competition, teamwork and fair play.

The UN mentions: “The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), which takes place annually on 6 April, presents an opportunity to recognize the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe.”

History:

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is a relatively young observance, established in 2013. Here’s a breakdown of its history:

  • Recognition of Sport’s Potential: The United Nations General Assembly recognised the power of sport to drive positive social change, promote development, and foster peace around the world.
  • Official Declaration: In August 2013, the UN General Assembly declared April 6th as the official IDSDP. This date holds significance as it commemorates the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 1896.
  • Collaboration with IOC: The International Olympic Committee (IOC), a strong believer in the potential of sport for positive social impact, actively supported the UN’s initiative. The IOC has been a Permanent Observer to the UN and played a key role in proposing and advocating for the IDSDP.

The International Olympic Committee mentions: “Creating a historical link to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, 6 April was declared the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2013, and has been celebrated each year since 2014.

“The IOC, in its capacity as Permanent Observer to the UN, proposed and supported this initiative, as it values its potential to recognise sports organisations’ role in and contribution to social change and human development,” it adds.
