International Design Day History, Activities, FAQs and Fun Facts

International Design Day is an opportunity to recognise the value of design and its capacity to effect change. On this day, we challenge designers to reflect deeply on the well-being of people within their local environments, and to find innovative solutions to local needs by using design as a vehicle to honor diversity and transcend borders.

International Design Day takes place on April 27 every year. It marks how design can change the world. Design has far-reaching impacts on our daily lives – much more than we realize. It exists in beautiful things around us – décor, artwork, landscaping. Design elevates the mundane, too. From flyers and roads to the chairs we sit on. Have you ever stopped to appreciate the high-tech sports gear you wear? Or the pedestrian path that makes walking such a pleasure? That’s the beauty of good design. It’s meaningful, inspirational, and exists all around us.

International Design Day: History

Celebrated since 1995, International Design Day commemorates the founding of the Council on 27 April 1963. Until 2020, this event was celebrated as World Design Day.

For most people, design is an ambiguous term. What appeals to one person or not is highly subjective. However, brilliant design will always achieve three core objectives. It is memorable, inspirational, and educational. The idea behind World Design Day came from Kim Paulsen, V.P. of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ico-D). The first edition was held on April 27, 1995, but it was named World Graphics Day then.

The initiative recognizes how design makes everyday life both beautiful and meaningful. The day celebrates all design aspects — aesthetics, form, and function. It also promotes several areas of design — visual communication, graphic design, awareness, promotion, management, and training worldwide.

International Design Day aims to inspire and raise general awareness of the value of design. Far from an abstract concept, design can change the world. History has ample examples. Great design is everywhere in our immediate environments. We only need to pause and take notice. Think innocuous objects like the stairs, tiles on the ground, or the packaging of our favorite items.

We know that design makes things look good. But in its various forms, the ultimate aim of the design is to improve the quality of life. It can dismantle barriers and make the world accessible to everyone. From wheelchairs that help you stand to phones that connect you to loved ones – good design makes life beautiful and the impossible achievable.

On International Design Day, designers everywhere celebrate their profession. The day calls on designers to harness their talents to improve public well-being. To channel their abilities to innovative solutions that meet the needs of their families, friends, and local environment.
