International Mine Awareness Day: Date, Theme, History, Significance

The General Assembly on December 8, 2005, declared that each year on April 4 would be officially proclaimed and observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

International Day For Mine Awareness: Day

This day spreads awareness about the threat caused by landmines to the safety, health and lives of civilian populations and encourages state governments to develop mine clearing programmes.

International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action: Theme

The International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistant in Mine Action on April 4 will focus on the survivors of explosive hazards with disabilities and the ones living with disabilities in conflict.

International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2019 theme is “United Nations Promotes SDGs – Safe Ground – Safe Home“. The architecture of the reforms of peace and security comprises the entire humanitarian, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. For 20 years, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has been working and solving the problems of the affected people and the threat of explosive hazards faced by civilians, peacekeepers and humanitarians. Basically, they protect civilians, support refugees, enable recovery activities, advocate human rights law, etc.

Every year, UNMAS organises a multimedia exhibition at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to spread awareness about the threats caused by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices. With the co-organizers, UNMAS announces a photo exhibition for the public featuring the “Safe Ground” campaign, which promotes the linkage between mine action, sport and the Sustainable Development Goals by showing how replacing minefields with playing fields brings communities together and raises awareness about victims and survivors of armed conflict.

Meaning of ‘Advancing Protection, Peace and Development’

Protection:

By providing risk education to the people with all the important information which is necessary for their protection. Further, to locate, remove and destroy explosive hazards and save the life of people living and working in such area.

Peace:

Mine action plays a crucial role in enabling and sustaining peace. Help civilians return into their normal lives by clearing land, opening roads and providing assistance to victims, which are also examples of tangible peace dividends.

Development:

It is necessary to survey and clear the explosive hazards which enable the development to flourish. New pistachio forests have been planted; wheat is grown on land once contaminated, etc. steps are taken.
