International No Diet Day 6 May: History, Significance and Benefits

International No Diet Day – INDD (May 06): Unrealistic body types, photoshopped pictures of models in magazines and an impossible body standard to attain – these are some of the reasons why there is a rising level of eating disorders among youth. Society has set a certain body type as the ideal one and hence, it rejects any other body type. Hence, body positivity has taken a dip, and this has further affected the morals of the youth of the world. Hence, to ensure that body positivity is reinstated, International No Diet Day is observed every year. It is an extremely important day to be observed.

As we gear up to celebrate the special day, here are a few things that we must keep in mind.

May 6th is #NoDietDay, an annual social media campaign to encourage the rejection of diet culture. This movement, started by Mary Evans Young in 1992, celebrates the importance of body acceptance, diversity, and respect for all body shapes and sizes. We invite you to join us in challenging diet culture by promoting healthy relationships with food, movement, and body image! You deserve to live a full life, free from the pressures of diet culture. Diets encourage self-hate; when we fight back against these societal ideals, everyone wins.

International No Diet Day: History

In 1992, Mary Evans started International No Diet Day with the intention of teaching people the importance of body positivity, appreciating their own bodies and also taking a day off from their diet and enjoying a meal that they love. Mary Evans suffered from Anorexia and started her organisation called Diet Breakers. International No Diet Day was started with the intention of shattering the idea of setting unnatural body standards and embracing our bodies the way they are.

International No Diet Day: Significance

The best way to celebrate the special day is by de-emphasising on eating a diet to look a certain way. The day is a reminder to look at ourselves and appreciate the way we are, listen to our bodies and minds and love ourselves a little more. This day also intends to help end weight discrimination, fat shaming and phobia of size. Instead, it helps in embracing body diversity and accepting ourselves as well as others the way we are.

Tasting the flavours

  • Often we shift to a strict diet to lose weight or shed fat or gain a certain body type – this further makes us eat food items that we may not like having. Hence, we are unable to enjoy the meal and taste the flavours that are part of the dish. A happy meal with no restrictions can help us experience food like how it is meant to be – tasting the flavours and relishing it.

Trying new foods

  • When we take a day off from having a strict diet, we also become more open to trying out new dishes, new food items and new cuisine. This broadens our horizon and helps us experience better food.

Developing a healthy attitude

  • This also helps us to look forward to having food, thinking healthy about food and developing an overall healthy and happy attitude towards food. This can further help us to address eating disorders.

Better nutrition

  • When we eat together with our oved ones, we develop the urge to consume more food. This also helps us to acquire more nutrition from food.

  • Having a happy meal can make us feel satisfied. This boosts mood and helps us to feel better.

Of course, we appreciate International No Diet Day for its body positivity and self-acceptance, but we also sure do appreciate some good cheese fries.

  • As Mary Evans Young so keenly asked girls in 1992, “What do you think would happen if you spent as much time and energy on your careers as you do on your diets?” And the woman had a point. Focusing on constantly limiting and shaming yourself in the name of a diet steals focus from things that are proven to improve your life far more than being skinnier ever will.

It teaches self-love and acceptance

  • Sometimes, it can be hard to love the person in the mirror. Especially for young people and women, it’s been shown that societal pressures to look a certain way take a huge mental toll. From stick-thin models in advertisements to ever-present billboards heralding the latest fad diet, the physical ideal society has given us feels inescapable – and many of us weren’t made with the same cookie cutter. INDD reminds us that that’s okay. There is beauty in every size and shape.
