The Guinness World Records world record for the most letters to Santa collected in 24 hours is 1,555 letters and was achieved by members of the public in an event organised by Crispy Milky Kids Activities (Latvia) at the Galerija Azur shopping centre in Riga, Latvia, on 11 December 2011.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest collection of letter openers is 5,000 letter openers and belongs to Santa Fe College Foundation (USA), in Gainesville, Florida, USA, as verified on 25 October 2012.

Chen Ying-ming, owner of a Green Island-based souvenir business, said a dive team that he organized from local enthusiasts will service the box, located 12m below sea level in the Shilang Diving Area, every other day, to take the postcards deposited by tourists to a post office in the township.

The current record holder certified by Guinness World Records is a 10m deep mailbox in the sea near the town of Susami in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.

The Green Island underwater mailbox was made with non-polluting metals and placed in a sandy area of the seabed to avoid harm to coral reefs’ natural growth, and the postcards used for the box are made with water-resistant material for the same reason, Chen said.

In addition to collecting mail, the box has a separate slot for small pieces of refuse that divers may find in the area, he said, adding that he hopes the box will entertain tourists and help keep the seas clean.
