Fastest SUV

Torrance, California, USA – May 9, 2017 – A custom-made, 2,000 horsepower Toyota Land Cruiser piloted by former NASCAR driver Carl Edwards reached a GPS-verified and video-documented 230.02 mph, thus setting the new world record for the Fastest SUV.

Piloted by former NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, the heavily modified Land Cruiser added 19mph to the previous benchmark set by the Brabus Bi-Turbo V12 GLK, which has a top speed of 211mph.

The Guinness World Records world record for the fastest standing mile (electric car) is 304.94 kilometres per hour (189.481 miles per hour) and was achieved by Johnny Bohmer and Genovation Cars Inc. (both USA) at the Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida, USA, on 28 July 2016.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the fastest 1/4 mile by an electric car; it is 11.850 sec, achieved by Mate Rimac (Croatia) driving a modified BMW M3 E30, at ETC, Velika Gorica, Croatia, on 17 April 2012. Rimac’s BMW has been equipped with a 440 kW electric motor powered by batteries rated at 24 kWh.

Driven by former NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, the car’s regular 381hp, 5.7L V8 engine was given two turbochargers and modified to increase the power output five-fold to 2,000 horsepower.

The SUV was fitted with wider tyres and the suspension lowered to reduce drag.

Using the Land Cruiser’s production 5.7-liter 3UR-FE V8 engine as a starting point, the team added a pair of volleyball-sized Garrett turbochargers that are capable of producing up to 55 PSI of boost.

To cope with extreme force induction, the MTC team upgraded the engine’s internals with sturdier pistons and rods and a custom-made intake manifold, among other key items.

This helped ensure the monstrous V8 could safely and reliably produce over 2,000 horsepower for its record-setting runs. The role of doling power was left to a custom racing transmission strong enough to withstand the stresses and abuses of high power and tremendous speeds.

Describing his record-breaking run, Edwards said: “At 225 mph, the thing was wandering a little bit. All I could think was that Craig said, ‘No matter what, just keep your foot in it,’ and we got 230 mph. “It’s safe to say that this is the fastest SUV on the planet.”

Quote of The Day

“Initially the team wanted to set a world record for the fastest SUV on planet earth,” says Dan Gardner, a Toyota spokesperson. “Guinness had some different ideas about definitions of the word SUV around the world, though, and they weren’t willing to recognise the category,” The Top Gear reports.

(Why on Earth would a giant like Toyota would even care about the ‘recognition’ given by a book for children? Maybe they want to sell toys in the future?)

Bentley still hold the record for the fastest unmodified production SUV, having reached 187mph on a test track prior to its release in September 2015.

In March this year, Nissan set the record for the world’s fastest SUV half-mile, when a turbocharged Patrol 4×4 was clocked doing 206.9mph in Qatar.
