Turkmenistan World Records: Largest bird-shaped building

Asghabat, Turkmenistan – July 26, 2016 – The bird shaped main terminal of the Ashgabat International Airport was inspired by famous national bird, Lacyn which is a falcon species found mainly in Turkmenistan; the size of the bird can be very easily identifiable and the wing span is 364 meters long, thus setting the new world record for the Largest bird-shaped building.

The new terminal building, of which the design was inspired by the national symbols of Turkmenistan, will be able to host 14 million domestic and international passengers annually to IATA Class A service standards with a total enclosed area of 161,851 m². The terminal has 15 bridged gates for passengers.

The Guinness World Records world record for the Heaviest building was set by the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania. It is constructed from 700,000 tonnes (1.5 billion lb) of steel and bronze combined with 1 million m³ (35.3 million ft³) of marble, 3,500 tonnes (7.7 million lb) of crystal glass and 900,000 m³ (31.7 million ft³) of wood.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Largest mud building, set by The Grand Mosque in Djenne, Mali, is the largest mud building in the world measuring 100 m (328 ft) long and 40 m (131 ft) wide.

The new terminal building, of which the design was inspired by the national symbols of Turkmenistan, will be able to host 14 million domestic and international passengers annually to IATA Class A service standards with a total enclosed area of 161,851 m².

The terminal has 15 bridged gates for passengers.

The bird sits fully on top of the main passenger terminal. The passenger terminal is a building on its own that is connected to the pier structure behind it .

The dotted line represents the border of land and air side. In many airports these structures are farther separated. There is a single roof for the main terminal and it is this bird.

The project also includes the construction of a new 7,840 meter long CAT III runway with Code F capacity that can accommodate the Airbus A380 and Boeing B747-8, the largest existing passenger aircrafts, as well as parallel taxiways and ramps.

Including the existing runway and taxiways, which will continue to be used following modification, a total of 2,428,344 m2 of runways, aprons and taxiways will be constructed within this project.

The new airport project will include the construction of a VIP terminal, an air traffic control tower, indoor and outdoor parking lots with a total capacity for 3,000 vehicles, a cargo terminal with an annual load capacity of 200,000 tons, an aircraft maintenance hangar with a capacity for three planes, a catering building, new fuel supply facilities, firefighting buildings, maintenance-repair and warehouse facilities, a civil aviation school, a flight and cabin training simulation building, a hospital, dormitory, indoor sports hall and other administrative and technical support facilities, bringing the total enclosed area of Ashgabat International Airport to 408,046 m2.

The supply and operation of the new runway, apron and ground service vehicles, the new air traffic control systems, simulators, equipment for the maintenance hangar, security systems, information technologies systems and all similar technical equipment and related training will also be provided by Polimeks. It is planned that the new airport will provide services to Ashgabat for the next 30 years.
