Natick, Massachusetts, USA – August 14, 2017 – A group of Natick High School students set off a stick bomb with 68,480 sticks in the school’s gym – shattering the existing Guinness World Record of 40,910 sticks and setting the new world record for the Largest stick bomb.

The Guinness World Records world record for the largest stick bomb consists of 40,910 sticks and was achieved by the Tulln Domino Team (Austria), in Tulln, Austria, on 22 March 2016.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest incense stick mosaic; it measures 10.48 m² (112 ft² 116 in²), created by Sakai Technology High School (Japan) at Sakai City Industrial Promotion Center, in Sakai, Osaka, Japan, on 17 December 2016.

It lasted fewer than 30 seconds, but took two-dozen students nearly 24 hours to build. In the end, almost the entire structure – 68,480 sticks – exploded, The Wicked Local Natick reports.

A stick bomb, according to a spokesperson from the school, is a weave of popsicle sticks in which the removal of one stick causes a chain reaction of sticks relieving their tension by flying into the air in spectacular fashion.

“Obviously they put a lot of time, thought, energy into it,” said Principal Brian Harrigan. “It’s just really fun for the kids, kind of a testament to everyone’s hard work, and it was great having the whole school here cheering them on.”

This year, the “Sticks for Change” group decided to make the event a fundraiser, collecting more than $4,000 for three local charities.

The money will be split between the Natick Service Council, the food pantry A Place to Turn, and the Disabled American Veterans of Massachusetts, which provides counseling and benefits assistance to veterans with disabilities.
