Sutra Neti is specially prepared with fine cotton thread about 12 inches long. A thin rubber catheter can also be used in place of cotton thread. It is about 2-4 mm thick rubber like thread. Rubber catheter is soft enough to insert into nostril. It slides easily through the nasal passage. Therefore. for beginners. It is more preferable to use rubber catheter. After mastering on this Rubber Neti, a sadhak can shift to cotton thread.
Sutra Neti / Rubber Neti
Precautions:
People suffering from chronic nasal bleeding, nasal polyps. heart disease and hypertension, should consult an expert before practice of this Kriya.
Technique of Sutra Neti / Rubber Neti:
Sit in squatting position or stand straight in an erect position. Hold Sutra Neti or a Rubber Neti and wash it with warm water. Insert the thread / rubber catheter slowly and gently into the nostril through which breath in freely flowing. If you feel some irritation while inserting the catheter, stop inserting the catheter. After a short while, restart inserting the catheter slowly. When catheter touches the back of the throat, open your mouth and grab the head of the catheter from inside of your throat using your index and middle finger of the right hand and other end of the catheter in the nose with the thumb, index and middle fingers of your left hand. Move the catheter in and out gently to clean the nostril and throat for 4 to 5 times. Now take it out slowly through the mouth. Repeat it from other nostril. Wash the cotton thread rubber catheter with clean water.
